Medieval Old Town – Where Fairy Tales Come to Life
At the heart of Tallinn lies one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval old towns, where every cobblestone tells a story. This picture-perfect UNESCO World Heritage gem is a fairytale neighbourhood of colourful merchant houses, hidden courtyards, medieval markets, and towering church spires. With its twisting cobblestone streets, a beautifully preserved Gothic Town Hall, and centuries-old town wall, Tallinn’s Old Town transports visitors into the vibrant days of its Hanseatic trading past. It’s a magical destination where history truly comes to life.
Hip and Design Districts
Tallinn’s unique charm lies in the diversity of its vibrant districts, each adding to the city’s distinctive atmosphere. Beyond the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, Tallinn showcases a contemporary side with bold architecture and revitalised factory zones buzzing with energy, dining, and nightlife.
The transformed neighbourhoods of Rotermanni, Telliskivi, and Noblessner are beloved by locals and visitors alike. Telliskivi Creative City, once a collection of factories, now pulses with creativity, housing art studios, design shops, and innovative businesses. The Rotermann Quarter masterfully combines industrial heritage with sleek, modern architecture, offering a glimpse of Tallinn’s forward-looking spirit. Noblessner, a former shipyard, has been reborn as a stylish waterfront hub for culture, gastronomy, and design.
These districts are home to an array of design boutiques, art galleries, eclectic cafés, cosy restaurants, microbreweries, and cultural spaces, all occupying buildings that once stood as abandoned warehouses and shipyard halls, now transformed into hubs of creativity and inspiration.
Walkable City
Tallinn strikes the perfect balance – neither too big nor too small. With a population of 450,000, the city is cosy and compact, offering most sights, meeting hotels, event venues, and restaurants within easy walking distance. Even Tallinn International Airport is just 4 km (15 minutes) from the city centre and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most hassle-free airports. The passenger port, conveniently located next to the Old Town, further enhances accessibility.
Tallinn’s charm lies in its walkability, allowing visitors to easily stroll between destinations, while its metropolitan atmosphere ensures there’s always something new to discover. For longer journeys, the city offers a reliable public transport system. Tallinn has also been a pioneer of free public transportation – since 2013, all residents have enjoyed free access to buses and trams as part of the city’s eco-friendly initiatives.

Free Public Transport for Conferences and Events in Tallinn
Tallinn’s compact layout ensures that most venues, hotels, and attractions are easily accessible on foot. However, the city’s public transport system is invaluable for reaching outlying sights or making quick tram or bus connections from the airport. Free public transport is particularly helpful for events held outside the city centre, such as at TalTech, when delegates are staying in centrally located hotels.
